Vishwaroopam Ban Lifted at Tamilnadu

vishwaroopam-ban-lifted
Vishwaroopam Ban Lifted at Tamilnadu
The prolonged wait for Vishwaroopam is over and the Madras High Court has today lifted the ban on Vishwaroopam imposed by Tamil Nadu Govt. Judge Venkatraman has delivered the verdict at about 10 pm tonight. Now the film can be screened starting from tomorrow onwards. This comes as a big releif to the actor who has directed and produced the film. Now everyone is expecting to release the film in theatres tomorrow.
The judge has observed that after a central committe, censor board, clears a film, a government cannot ban it. The veridct came after six hours of heated arguments between advocates representing the various sections of the agitating Muslim outfits, Kamal Haasan, public who had pre-booked the tickets and the Govt. The judge also observed that government cannot interfere in the individual’s freedom.
However, the Govt advocate has informed that they are going for an appeal against the judgement.

Vishwaroopam ban can spell Rs.30 crore loss

vishwaroobam
The delay in the screening of Kamal Haasan’s Rs.95 crore film “Vishwaroopam” in the wake of a ban after some groups tagged it as anti-Muslim is likely to result in an estimated loss of Rs.30 crore, say industry experts.
“A film like ‘Vishwaroopam’, which was promoted at a huge scale, will perhaps have to bear a loss of around Rs.20 to Rs.30 crore. But it also depends on the fate of the film. If the film again gets delayed, then the loss might even cross more than Rs.30 crore,” Mumbai-based distributor Rajesh Thadani of Multi Media Combines said.
After the ban on the international espionage drama, directed and produced by Kamal, in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala, distributors and theatre owners are worried about recovering the cost.
Karnataka distributor Gangaraju said that when a star’s film gets banned, the losses are heavy.
“If a single-screen theatre shells out about Rs.5-Rs.10 lakh for a film involving a big star, then only good opening can help break even in two weeks’ time,” he added.
A theatre owner said: “By Jan 22 we started bookings for ‘Vishwaroopam’ and removed all other other films that were playing. But the ban has come as a shocker and we had to fill the screens again with old films such as ‘Alex Pandian’ and ‘Samar’.”
The Tamil and Telugu versions of “Vishwaroopam”, which deals with the adversities of war, were scheduled to release Jan 25, but couldn’t come out on the schedule time as a ban was imposed by the Tamil Nadu government following protests from Muslim groups.
A day later, the Madras high court restricted the film’s release till Jan 28.
On Friday, some theatres in Andhra Pradesh and Kerala screened the film, but had to stop the run after religious leaders approached Home Minister Sabita Indra Reddy and urged a ban.
Prakash Reddy, a distributor, said: “A Kamal Haasan film is bound to have a good opening but sadly, that was not in the case of ‘Vishwaroopam’ as the shows were disrupted.”
Now “Vishwaroopam” is substituted by “Race 2″ and “Akaash Vani” in the multiplexes, while single screen theatres are playing Pongal releases like “Naayak” and “Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu” in Hyderabad.
It was the same in Karnataka.
“We definitely missed the box-office opening of the film. But our biggest problem now seems to be the reimbursement of tickets that were bought and booked online. Some said they don’t need their money back and demanded screening of the film again,” Gangaraju said.
To watch a film in a multiplex, viewers have to shell out somewhere between Rs.120-Rs.150 for a film. In cities like Bangalore, multiplexes some times charge Rs.250 per ticket at the weekend.
In single-screen theatres, the tickets are priced at Rs.70 to Rs.100 in the region.
Some audiences, who booked online, demanded instant reimbursement and made a ruckus at the theatres.
“Usually, a third party vendor takes care of online booking and it usually takes a few days for the money to get credited into their account, but since the shows were cancelled, most of them were disappointed,” added Gangaraju.
In Karnataka, multiplexes are now playing new Hindi releases along with Sudeep-starrer “Varadanayaka”. Some are also showing “Alex Pandian” and “Samar”.
In Kerala, “Vishwaroopam” released on 82 screens Jan 25, but soon after the first show, most theatres were forced to stop the screenings.
But on Jan 26 the film was shown in some theatres in Kerala with the help of youth wing members of certain parties.
“In places likes Trivandrum there was tension but members of Yuva Morcha and Hindu Munnani opposed the ban against the film and ensured a smooth run,” said Arvind.
But those who can’t run the film in the state are showing the Mammootty-starrer “Kammath Kammath”.
Initially, the film had a peaceful release in the overseas market, where distribution price is reportedly Rs.1.5 crore.
“‘Vishwaroopam’ collected Rs.57.13 lakh in Britain in the first three days,” tweeted trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
But now the trouble has travelled abroad with a ban on the film’s screening in Malaysia.
Confirming the same, A. Ramalingam, distributor of the film in Malaysia, said: “The film ran to packed houses on the first day but following a request from the ministry, we had to stop screening on Saturday.”

Vishwaroobam Movie Review

vishwaroobam-movie-review
Starring : Kamal Hassan, Pooja Kumar, Andrea, Rahul Bose, Shekar kapur
Direction : Kamal Hassan
Music : Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
Production : Raj Kamal Films
The entire country is waiting for Vishwaroopam and people in Tamil Nadu are hugely disappointed with the ban, but we at Kollywoodtoday bring you the exclusive review of Vishwaroopam . Here we go…
Vishwaroopam is one of the best films that India has ever produced. The production value, the screenplay execution, the cinematography and above all the man of the moment Kamal Hassan’s acting, every thing is top notch. Kudos to the entire team.
Kamal hassan(Vishwanath) a Kathak dancer is living with his wife Nirupama (Pooja Kumar) in New york in a marriage of convenience .Nirupama doen’t like Kamal hassan for his feminine gestures. Nirupama also has a soft corner on her boss and sends a detective to find a fault with Vishwanath in order to file a divorce. The rest of the story tells us the real side of Kamal Hassan. A roller coaster thriller well executed.
Kamal is excellent as a Kathak dancer and as a Kashimri. The transformation scene from Vishwanath to a Kashimiri was sheer mass and the fight sequences with ultra slow motion and the Yaar Endru Therigiratha BGM is brilliant.
Rahul Bose has played his cold blooded villainy character with ease. Pooja Kumar has played her role perfectly well and her character in the comic portions has worked really well.
Shekar Kapur, Andrea and Nasser have done their job well. Cinematography by Sanu Vargese is crystal clear and is on par with Hollywood standards. Illayaraja’s art direction deserves a huge applause, especially the Afghan sets that appear real.
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s Songs are good but the BGM is not up to the mark. Editing by Mahesh Naryan is slick and stylish. The reverse shots are exteremely good.
Verdict : On the whole Vishwaroopam is Kamal Hassan\’s best movie till now. Go, watch and enjoy the ride.

Rajinikanth and I are like 3D camera: Kamal Hassan

The friendship that two iconic stars of Tamil film industry, Rajinikanth and Kamal Hassan, is well-know yet they have been asked about it time and again. The duo has often admitted that they are like siblings but good competitors.
In spite of being competitors, Rajinikanth and Kamal Hassan never got into fights, like we see among Bollywood stars, nor they felt threatened, as they knew their strengths and weakness. They maintained a health competition and respected each other’s work. It is interesting to know that the actors, who started their career together during the same time, acted in many films before getting separated for commercial reasons.
However, once again on a leading national news channel, Kamal Hassan, who is gearing up for the release of his prestigious multilingual project Vishwaroopam, was asked about his friendship with superstar Rajinikanth for which the Ulaganayagan said that they have thought to live in harmony but they are stiff competitors.
Kamal Hassan said, “What I say is that we have been thought to look in unison and we are like a 3D camera. We have been trained by K Balachander. Fortunately, we are very stiff competitors but have stayed brothers. It is because we carved out our own domains,”

My son was in Mani sir safe hands – Karthik

Karthik
Tamil actor Karthik says he knew his son Gautham Karthik, who is making his debut with Mani Ratnam’s forthcoming Tamil romantic-drama “Kadal”, was in safe hands and that was why he never visited him on the sets.
“The day my son (Gautham) was cast in Mani sir’s film, I knew he was in safe hands. I didn’t have to worry at all. In fact, being a father, I didn’t even visit my son on the sets because Mani sir whom I also consider a father-like figure was taking care of him,” Karthik said.
Gautham is cast opposite Thulasi Nair, another debutant and daughter of yesteryear Tamil actress Radha.
The film, which is written, produced and directed by Ratnam, also stars Arvind Swamy, Arjun, Lakshmi Manchu and Thambi Ramaiah in important roles.
“Mani sir casts someone only if he or she is suitable for a role. I suppose he found my son apt for the role in the film and I’m happy he got the opportunity,” said Karthik.
The story of the film, which has music by A.R Rahman, is centred around the lives of Christian fishermen and releases worldwide Feb 1.

Rahman is full of surprises – ManiRatnam

Southern filmmaker Mani Ratnam has had a two-decade association with music composer A.R. Rahman but says he still hasn’t figured out quite how the Mozart of Madras works.
Ratnam introduced Rahman in his 1992 Tamil romantic-drama “Roja” and has since used him as composer in all his films.

Rahman has also composed the music for the forthcoming romantic-drama “Kadal”, written, produced and directed by Ratnam. It releases Feb 1.

“In my 20 years of association with Rahman, I still haven’t figured out how he works because he is full of surprises. For ‘Kadal’, he composed a song a called ‘Moongil thottam’ when I was out of town. He made me listen to the song after I returned and I was stunned,” Ratnam said.
Sometimes he has played few compositions to me which he claims to have composed on flight. I wonder how did even manage to compose a tune on flight with no instruments,” added the filmmaker.
“Kadal” features debutants Gautham Karthik and Thulasi Nair. It tells the story about the lives of Christian fishermen.
The cast also includes Arvind Swamy, Arjun, Lakshmi Manchu and Thambi Ramaiah in important roles.

Alexpandiyan Movie Review

Starring : Karthi, Anushka Shetty, Santhanam, Nikhita, Thukral Sanusha, Prathap Pothen
Direction : Suraaj
Music : Devi Sri Prasad
Production : K E Gnanavelraja
Karthi is one actor who didn’t had any failure till Saguni. But looks like the actor is fond of mass action entertainers and this time he is back with “Alex Pandian” which is directed by Suraaj. Does Alex Pandian lives up to the expectation?
The plot is nothing new, a bunch of villains chasing the heroine and our hero saves her single handedly. Karthi plays a rogue who kidnaps CM’s daughter Anushka. During the kidnapping episode, Anushka falls in love with Karthi and the rest of the so called story tells us how Karthi saves Anushka and most importantly the entire state from villains who are threatening the CM (Visu) to sign in a deal for supplying prohibited antibiotics to the people.
Karthi looks charming and the star has a lot of energy but all his energy goes with the lagging screenplay and the story which doesn’thave any logic. Anushka looks so matured and disinterested in many sequences. The only saving grace of the movie is Santhanam and his funny episodes in the first half is really engaging. But the double meaning dialogues and the high glamour quotient in the name of Santhanam’s sisters doesn’t entertain family audience.
Suraaj has adopted the same Padikathavan formula yet again. He had already proved that he is good in comic sequences but why is he continuously adopting stories which is not having any logic?. The stunt choreography in the movie is one of the worst in recent times and it seems they have totally forgot Newton’s gravitational law!!.
Devi Sri Prasad’s song and background score is too loud andSaravanan’s cinematography is stylish and editing is okay. On the whole, Alex Pandian might satisfy the audience who loves mindless action masalas.

Puthagam Movie Review

Cast : Sathya , Jagapathi Babu , Rakul Preet Singh
Director : Vijay Adiraj
Producer : S.Manjula
Music : James Vasanthan
Famous television personality Vijay Adiraj’s debut film as director Puthagam with newcomers fails to be an exciting page-turner. Half way through, this ‘book’ of 150 ‘pages’ (minutes), makes you fall asleep.
There is nothing fresh or absorbing in story, cast or presentation. Three guys led by Satya (Arya’s brother),Sanjay Bharathi (Santhana Bharathi’s son) and Vignesh are young guys living in a mansion in Triplicane. Sanjay and Vignesh are employed while Satya is still studying.
Soon, Satya falls in love with Rakul Preet Singh a television reporter. The three guys discover the ill-gotten wealth of a local politician (Suresh), and have a good time before nemesis catches up with them.
Then there is a detective (Jagapathy Babu) and his side –kick the glamorous Rachna Maurya clearly modelled on Pankaj Kapoor’s comedy television serial of 80’s Karamchand.
Puthagam is a mish-mash of various comedy films and serials and has no proper script or narration. Popular television stars pop in and out like Uma Padmanabhan, Fathima Babu, Thalaivasal Vijay and Manobala.
Why did the characterisation of Satya a mild mannered guy change in the climax to a one-man fighting machine in the climax? Heroism cannot be injected; it has to be a part of the narration.
Among the new faces, Rakul Preet Singh passes muster and is promising, while Satya tries to imitate his more famous brother Arya and needs improvement in all departments. The music of James Vasanthan is nothing much to rave about. The one silver lining in otherwise an insipid film is the camera of Laxman Kumar.
Vijay Adiraj intention was to make a commercially viable comedy thriller, but it has not worked out. Commercial entertainers should not have long drawn out scenes and it should be crisp and a bit more racy.

Madhan Karky is all praises for A.R. Rahman

Tamil lyricist Madhan Karky credits Oscar-winning music composer A.R. Rahman for his love for music.
“I fell in love with music because of Rahman’s compositions that I’ve been hearing over the years. He is the kind of composer who supersedes his own work with every new soundtrack. Penning songs for him is always a delightful experience,” Karky told reporters here.
He was speaking at the promotional event of “Kadal”, written, produced and directed by Mani Ratnam. Rahman has composed the music for the film.
Madhan, who has written two songs in “Kadal”, said that the best part about working with Ratnam is “I was given the freedom by Mani sir to be creative with my lyrics”.
Talking about one of the songs he penned, Karky said: “I’m very happy that ‘Elay Keechaan’ is a runaway hit. The song brings forth the celebration of fishermen after a big catch”.
Coming out Feb 1, “Kadal” stars newcomers Gautham Karthik and Thulasi Nair in the lead. Other cast members include Arvind Swamy, Arjun, Lakshmi Manchu and Thambi Ramaiah. The film’s cinematography is by Rajiv Menon and editing by Sreekar Prasad.

Bhoologam Movie Press Release

Jayam Ravi who has been playing a chocolate boy role with perfection and had been making a few hearts skip their beat with his handsome looks, naughty performance and feel good movies has been leaping into the big shoes of a mass hero and a star . If his prowess for action was proved right in ‘Peraanmai’ by Director S .P. Jhananathan here comes “Bhooloham” to cement his place as an action star !!! It is no co incidence that “Bhooloham” is directed by N. Kalyanakrishnan who had associated Director Jhananathan in all his ventures.
Producer V. Ravichandran of Aascar films who is known for his eyes and ears for successful formulas in film making was impressed by the narration style of the young director and is confident that the making and the cast of the film will rank itself into the big film category!!!
The director who had spent considerable period in researching the nuances of ‘boxing’ in north madras says this film has a vision and we are focused… Set in the back drop of North Madras still a haven for “boxing” in this part of the country Jayam Ravi plays the role of a Boxer, “Bhooloham” who hit the national headlines maneuvered by the demons and compulsions of the society.
Trisha beautiful as ever celebrates her decade long relationship with the tinsel world by playing the female lead a role very contrary to the jumping around the tree heroine role!!!
Prakashraj hasn’t been challenged in terms of characters considering his potentiality…it is true that there are not much challenges ahead of him when it comes to sheer performance. In ‘Bhooloham’ he plays a ‘powerful role’…and virtually a powerful role …his could be the most discussed in the near future.
The casting is power packed we would rather say when you have Arpit ranga as National Boxing Champion, Rajesh as State Boxing champion , Shanmugarajan and Ponvannan . The song depicting the relationship between Jayam ravi the disciple and Ponvannan the master would go a long way in the emotional angle , and I was amazed by the acting potentiality of Jayam ravi in those scenes …he was terrific , the director gleefully endorses ..
While I have penned the script and screen play along with directing the film , Iam very fortunate to have Jahanathan sir to pen the dialogues and his outlook on the society has been reflected well in every single phrace !!!
The sound of music is orchestered by Srikkanth Deva, and his numbers in the movie will definitely cater to the ears of the masses, the ample proof is the popularity it enjoys among the unit members now. Lyric writer Vijaysagar brings the ‘typical slang and culture’ of North Madras with his songs and the director of photography SR. Sathish kumar of Peraanmai fame (unseen visuals were introduced to the audience in his ‘taming of the forest’) and art director debutant AR Mohan combine to gather to bring the color and culture of the boxing back ground!!!
The icing of the cake for an action flick is always the editing and with Editor V .T .Vijayan on the helm it stands assured. Every eye that watched ‘Peraanmai’ was in awe on the intensity of the stunt sequence and every lip muttered ‘wow’…here is a repeat rather much intensified action by the stunt master Miracle Michael (stunt director for Kochadaiyaan).
The ultimate attraction of ‘Bhooloham’ would be the action sequence involving Jayam Ravi and Nathan jones (Hollywood artiste from America, who stands tall… literally seven feet…who has got fans all around the globe “Troy” fame). Here is a clash where it will not be just the sparks but bomb shells!!! Watch out for ‘Bhooloham’. The stage is all set for a knockout punch and we will deliver the punch in style…The director flashes his toothy smile …

Digitisation will help films struggling for release

Digitisation will be a boon for hundreds of unreleased films struggling to find cinemas, feels Prasad, president of the Film Chamber of Commerce, South India.
“There are approximately 400 films still lying in labs without any takers and lack of cinemas. Digitisation will certainly help these unreleased films make some money,” Prasad said.
“Platforms such as Direct-To-Home (DTH) and Youtube need to be welcomed to help these films get released,” he added.
Prasad also supported actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan’s decision to release “Vishwaroopam” via DTH. “Vishwaroopam” is a Tamil-Hindi bilingual film, written, directed and produced by Kamal. It will be released on DTH Jan 10, a day before its theatrical release Jan 11.
“I welcome the move by Kamal Haasan to release his film on DTH and we will extend our support in this endeavour,” he said.
Asked if digitisation will replace cinemas, Prasad said: “In this digital era, both cinemas and digital platforms can mutually co-exist provided theatre owners don’t stop protesting against the release of films.”
“By protesting, theatre owners are in a way only persuading audiences to resort to using digital options,” said Prasad.
