Desingu Raja Movie Review

Desingu Raja is a rural romantic comedy with a plot so stale, your hand instinctively reaches for your nose as you walk into the theater. The story is set between two warring villages featuring two influential families. Idhayakani (Vimal) is the sole male heir of one family and Thamarai (Bindu) is the daughter of the other. Love, obviously, blossoms between the two and quickly heightens, leading to some unexpected kasamusa. Thanks to the generations of rivalry, their romance is strictly opposed by both the families and yawwwwwn.

As the basic premise is laid out in the first few minutes, it becomes very clear how this movie will eventually unfold. Unsurprisingly, it doesn’t have any tricks hidden up its sleeve. A bevy of comedians, under the guise of being thai-maamans and pangaalis, try their best to evoke some laughter. A series of made-up villains, posing as chittappas and thathas, do what is expected of them. Then the movie ends without much ado. It is an unambitious film which earnestly wants you to have a good time. In the end, Desingu Raja becomes just another forgettable comedy which very few people will remember after a couple of months.

Until a few minutes ago, I was under the impression that the this film was director Ezhil’s first. Then I read somewhere that he had made a movie called “Manamkothi Paravarai”, a movie which I never knew existed. It was only after I checked the Wiki page that I learnt he has been working for well over 15 years with a couple of hits to his name. I cannot think of any aspect of this film worth praising.

Vimal is one of the dullest lead actors working in the industry right now. In every film of his that I have seen, he is basically playing the same person: himself. Describing his never-changing look, a friend once told me Vimal looks like a guy who hasn’t brushed his teeth in a long time. For some reason, I think that’s a very precise description. What’s most surprising is that “Desingu Raja” happens to be Vimal’s fourth film the year. The two leads have a decent chemistry, though. Bindhu Madhavi looks rather pretty in this film. There’s also this comedian named Singam Puli who deserves a mention. He is often annoying, but he is among the few in this film who at least try.

How can a film which doesn’t take itself seriously expect viewers to do the opposite? It maintains a completely irreverent attitude towards the somewhat heavy subject of family rivalry. I understand that this is a comedy, but it has a ridiculously silly climax which turns the film’s premise itself into a joke. And it is painfully unfunny. Towards the very end of the film, a Kabbadi tournament is arranged and a bunch of cheerleaders assembled. This, we are told, is enough to melt away all the anger that both the families have held for decades. Soon, everyone and their grandmother is dancing to Waka Waka and Gangnam Style and we learn that the movie has ended. Thank you for your 120. You may leave now.

Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga Movie Review

Known for blending humor into the narrative of all his films, director Pandiraj has pulled off yet another full length comedy entertainer with a heart-tugging message towards the end. ‘Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga’ (KBKR) doesn’t boast of a storyline that will keep you hinged to your seats, but thankfully it has comedy to appeal one and all from the word go. Subtly addressing several issues revolving around modern day youngsters, KBKR has a winner written all over it.

Revolving mostly around the friendship of two childhood friends, Kesavan and Murugan, KBKR takes us the lives of these two characters and what happens in their lives when they decided to earn a career in politics. But, when things don’t go as planned, what happens in their lives? This forms the rest of the story.

Director Pandiraj, known for churning commercial entertainer, has this time very intelligently addressed the modern day relationship between parents and children in today’s era. By making a story as entertaining as possible, the film strikes chord with a little melodramatic but effective climax.

The subplots about the filth of politics and the state of politics in this country aptly fit into the narrative of the film. It also paves way to sensible comedy that at that very instant may appear stupid but will make sense later.

Performances by Vimal and Siva are satisfying, while Bindu and Regina also shine in the respective roles. It is extremely difficult to find even a single dull moment in the film, thanks to the director for that. Even though the film is a comedy entertainer at heart, but it succeeds in managing to drive home a thought worth dissection.

Yuvan’s music is partly elevates the film to certain extent, but on the whole it’s the simple story and witty dialogues work in the favour of the film. If you want to watch something worthy of every penny you spend, then here is your film

Verdict : Definitely watchable

Sillunu Oru Sandhippu Movie Review

Ravi Lallin’s Sillunu oru Sandhippu is a triangular love story which has Vimal,Oviya and Dipa Shah in the lead. On seeing the title one could expect a novel love story. But what the director adopts here is a tired and tested triangular love story.

Vimal and Oviya were classmates in a high school in ooty and loves each other , later they parted away as they are minors . Vimal goes to USA and gets settled there,when he returns to India he falls in love with Dipa Shah who is the sister of Vimal’s sister-in law. When they were about to marry there comes Oviya and the rest of the story is very much predictable.

Ravi Lallin tries to convey a message to the audience but adding the unecessary masala elements and outdated screenplay the film looks so amateurish. Vimal as a school student is a complete shocker so as Oviya. Vimal has to work in his accent or else he might not do any urban stories. Oviya tries to please the audience with her glam looks and Dipa Shah’s acting is not up to the mark. There are so many charcters in the film particularly Mano bala ‘s comedy and Charu haasan’s philosophy are the height of boredom which tests our patience.

The only saving grace of Sillunu Oru Kadhal is Rajesh Yadav’s cinematography ,Music by Fazil is loud so as the BGM. Over all Ravi Lallin’s Siiluno Oru Kadhal is a tiring watch.
